Injuries

I have a pain in my shoulder that gets easier and easier to trigger over time. What could it be?

For a little background to help you understand how this came about, I played organized baseball for several years until my late teens. I never noticed problems until after I started working out regularly in my early 20s, when throwing a softball or doing certain weightlifting exercises would cause a slight pain in my shoulder to flare up and it would get worse if I continued the exercise. The pain wasn’t that bad but it always lasted several days, and it’s only my right shoulder.

Fast-forward to now and I’m 25, and the pain has gradually gotten easier to set off and the pain is getting stronger. The pain isn’t unbearable, but it’s bad enough to prevent me from doing certain activities. For example it’s hurting right now because I was playing Nintendo Wii yesterday. Basically anything that puts stress on my shoulder’s upper range of motion has a good chance of tweaking it, which makes it hard to avoid.

I’m thinking some minor tear is the problem. If so how can I fix it?

  1. It could be a rotator cuff tear, or it could be an inflammed bursis. Either one can be treated, but a rotator cuff requires surgery and can be diagnosed by ultrasound scan. A bursis can be drained or injected with cortizone.. I had this and it continued for three years. Then I dislocated my shoulder and it went away (no pain now for two years). Not a recommended treatment, but for me it must have been a bursis inflamation and I probably “burst the bursis” and allowed it to drain on it’s own.

  2. hi quite often neck pain can cause trouble in shoulder and if you do think there is maybe a tear or injury best thing i suggest would be to visit your gp who can referr you for an xray rather than worry what problem could be ?its mibbe repetative strain over the years.
